Boolagh Stud is owned and run by John and Olivia Holohan
and their 3 sons Matty, Seamus and Francis


Grew up in Ireland he h
as a wealth of experience with all types of horses. As a Son of a horse dealer, he was riding and training young animals from a very young age.
He grew up showjumping ponies, and hunting.
As a young man he successfully trained and rode his own point too pointers.
He also produced some very good showjumpers.

When John met Olivia (known as Polly ) they teamed up they ran a very successful yard in East Harling, Norfolk, selling sport horses – hand picked by John in Ireland, imported and produced by them. Horses which were highly successful at top level in showjumping, eventing and showing, as well as ponies, cobs, and hunters.


Grew up in Norfolk,. A member of the South Norfolk Pony Club. Competed on ponies in all disciplines. And Hunted with the Dunston Harriers. Started  out her horsey carreer in earnest running a small livery and breaking yard near East Harling where she lived with her parents.

She bought Rusticus in 1980, with the intention of riding him at Badminton one day.

She met John just after this, and in 1983 they were married.

Rusticus proved a really good horse, and they had a lot of success climaxing with -

Represented Ireland on the Irish Three Day Event Team with  Rusticus 1989 – 1992.


She won Team Bronze European Championships in Burghley 1989. Team Silver and 8th individually, European Championships Punchestown 1992, as well as competing in the Team at the World Championships in Stockholm 1990 and at the Barcelona Olympics 1992.


She completed Burghley on four separate occasions, Badminton, Punchestown five times, with several different horses, Blenheim and Bramham, always well placed and with different horses. She had many good wins in Advanced One Day Events over the years.


Since 1992 she has retired from top level competition to have a family and concentrate on producing young horses, and riders. Two of her pupils have already competed at European (Junior) Team level.


Two most notable horses started by her are:- Giltedge, sold to USA – Team Olympic Gold, and Individual Gold, and winner of Kentucky 3 Day Event twice.

Moonfleet – winner of Burghley 2005, Badminton 2006, and  2nd Burghley 2006, Competed by her to intermediate standard.

After the Olympics in Barcelona, they decided to return to Ireland and start a family. Concentrating on their businesss from there, producing and selling young horses.

They now run a diverse operation involving their whole family. Their 3 boys all showjump very competitively, adding to the business. John also has a good selection of National Hunt horses bought in as foals. He is always searching for, and finding potential young horses of every type for showing, showjumping, eventing and hunting as well as good ponies for the same jobs.
